Know Smoking

Interview With Simon Bryant

Why did you write Know Smoking? (that's K-N-O-W Smoking) Aren't there already many good books on how to quit smoking?

There are indeed, but people don't read them. Of all current smokers, half have no intention or plans to quit and another third only consider quitting from time to time. But two-thirds of ex-smokers say that what helped them the most was accurate information about the health consequences of smoking. So I've written an entertaining, life-saving, and very easy to read book for people who aren't about to quit.

How can a book about smoking be entertaining?

It's actually a story, with information embedded in it. Sort of like sugar-coated medicine. A character by the name of Joe K. Hamel, who just happens to work for a tobacco company, falls ill with a mysterious disease. But he doesn't want to stop smoking! And so he meets Dr. Borenot. Over the course of the story Joe and Dr. Borenot discuss the most important aspects of smoking and quitting: why people smoke, how nicotine is addictive, the benefits of quitting, the effects of second-hand smoke, the cost of smoking, the six stages of change, how to control weight and stress, and how women and men are different where smoking is concerned.

It sounds like a lot of information!

But this is a very easy-to-read book that makes a wonderful gift. I wrote it because I wanted to have something to give to my patients that would explain the facts without lecturing at them. And you know, fifteen-year olds have told me they enjoyed it and doctors have told me they learned from it.

What sort of reactions are you getting to your book?

Smokers love it because it doesn't "preach" at them, but it does contain life-saving information that they all want to know. There are light-hearted parts and cartoon illustrations, also. My best review was from a fellow who quit smoking after reading it. And many physicians are recommending it to their patients.

Is it guaranteed to help a person quit smoking?

It's guaranteed to help people understand the habit, even non-smokers. Not everybody is ready to quit right away. Accurate information can help somebody make that decision, though. I've never met anybody who regretted buying this book, or quitting smoking.
