LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Hello again everyone!
Spring is in the air (well, for those of you south of the
equator, just play along). Cool breezes, longer days, the sounds
of birds in the trees, budding flowers and leaves all signal
"the great awakening." Life "springs" forth this time of year.
It's a great time of renewal and cleansing.
Why not extend your spring cleaning to your health and smoking?
Make this spring the season that you quit smoking. I've written
several times about setting New Year's resolutions. How about
setting a Spring resolution? You can do it!
The warm weather affords you the opportunity to get outside and
exercise. Take advantage of this! Turn your health around today!
+++
Just in time for your Spring cleaning, we've got a special on
the Oxyfresh Air 250 air cleaning system. This amazing air
cleaner can help you clear your home of smoke odors, plus help
with pollen and allergies.

As a personal note, I wanted to let you know about my new web
site at http://www.ProsperousInternet.com
No, it has nothing to do with quitting smoking, but I wanted to
let you know about it. Here's why:
I have had a terrific time running the QuitSmoking.com web
site. It has allowed me to help thousands of smokers all over
the world. This has been very rewarding. And yes, it has helped
me to earn a living. In the process of working on the Web, I
decided to set up a web site that can help other people start
their own prosperous business on the Web.
When you quit smoking it can really help you to have something
else to occupy your mind and your time. Starting your own
business might just be the distraction you need!
I encourage you to take a look at
http://www.ProsperousInternet.com to learn
how you can start
your own Internet business. Be sure to sign up for the
Prosperous Internet Marketing Ezine (PrIME). I'll be providing
helpful information in a format similar to this ezine.

ARTICLE: The One Thing Absolutely Guaranteed to Help You Quit
Smoking
By Fred H. Kelley
With a title like the one above you're probably skeptical. Who
wouldn't be? It's so difficult to quit smoking, there can't
possible be a foolproof way to quit. Besides, if someone
invented a guaranteed way to quit the tobacco companies would
probably "buy them out."
Well, I'm here to tell you that there is one way to guarantee
that you quit smoking.
I was watching the comedy "City Slickers" the other day. In it
Billy Crystal plays a middle-aged man who has "lost his smile"
and can't seem to find happiness or meaning in his life. So he
sets off with some friends to go on a "fantasy vacation" where
they get to play cowboys on a real cattle drive. Jack Palance
plays a crusty old cowboy named Curly, guiding the "city folk"
on the drive.
Billy Crystal and Jack Palance are having a conversation along
the trail. Palance asks Crystal, "Do you know what the secret of
life is?" Crystal responds "No, what?" Palance holds up his
gloved index finger and says "This." Crystal wisecracks, "Your
finger?" Palance continues, "One thing. Just one thing. You
stick to that and everything else don't mean @#*$!" Crystal
asks, "That's great, but what's the one thing?" Then Palance
gives Crystal the nugget of wisdom I want you to pay attention
to: "That's what you've gotta figure out."
As long as there have been cigarettes there have been smokers.
And as long as there have been smokers there have been smokers
who wanted to quit. Consequently, there have also been people
and companies offering ideas, plans and products to help those
smokers quit.
Because every smoker is different there is not a single "cure"
for smoking. If that were the case, I'd only have to write one
article and send it out over and over again. There would only be
one quit smoking product on the QuitSmoking.com web site.
But guess what? What works to help you quit smoking doesn't work
for the next person who is quitting. Even the giant drug
manufacturers with all their millions of dollars available for
research can't seem to find a product that will help more than
20-50% (depending on which study you read) of their customers
quit permanently.
So, do you just throw in the towel and give up this hopeless
cause? Absolutely not! You keep trying until you quit.
At the end of "City Slickers" after Billy Crystal and his
friends have tested their mettle and "found themselves" during
the difficult cattle drive, they are talking about the changes
they are going to make in their lives. Bruno Kirby plays one of
Crystal's friends on the trip. He asks Crystal, "You going to be
okay?" Crystal responds, "Yeah, 'cause I know what he meant."
"Who?" Kirby asks. "Curly...I know what this is," Crystal says,
holding up his index finger. Kirby is confused and asks "What?"
Crystal explains, "That's what you have to figure out."
Frustrated, Kirby threatens, "I'm gonna deck you, pal!" Then
Crystal tells him the final truth that I want you to understand:
"No, that's what it is-it's something different for everybody.
It's whatever is most important for you."
I'm often asked what's the best way to quit smoking. The answer
is simple: THE WAY THAT WORKS FOR **YOU**.
Why am I writing an article for this ezine twice per month? I
want you to have many different thoughts and approaches for
quitting. If you try one method and don't succeed, try again.
Keep looking until you find the solution that's right for YOU.
That's the "one thing" absolutely guaranteed to help you quit
smoking.

SMOKERS' STORIES
If you can help these folks with your suggestions please send
them email.
Trish asked me to remove her from this ezine list because she
finally kicked the habit. Hurrah! Before she was "gone" I asked
her to share her quitting story. Here it is:
Hey Fred!
Thanks for your help. This web site was definitely a big help in
quitting smoking. I quit on Feb 12 and have no desire to ever
smoke again. Reading other people's stories was a large part of
the process, I know I'm not alone.
I've always known that smoking was a disgusting habit but never
had the courage to quit. I would use any excuse I could in order
to light one up. I even fooled myself into believing that it was
okay to smoke when I went for a few beers with friends. That
only resulted in going for beers all too often! When I finally
decided to quit, my last pack of cigarettes was an American
brand (I am from Canada and have smoked Canadian cigarettes for
19 years). I have never enjoyed the taste or smell of American
cigarettes so I really, really had to want one in order to light
up. That one pack of 20 lasted almost two weeks!! After that, it
was pretty easy to quit. After all, I had already cut down
considerably!
I had heard that switching to a brand of cigarettes that you
don't normally smoke helps in the cutting down/quitting process,
and now I believe it! For all of you that smoke American
cigarettes, try a pack of Canadian cigarettes. It may be just
the thing. (But you have to allow yourself ONLY the cigarettes
you don't like, or it defeats the purpose!)
Good luck to all you non-smokers, and soon to be non-smokers!
Trish

Subject: Anyone can do it!
I was always the kind of person who HATED cigarettes. It was not
even a question that I would NEVER smoke. I used to harp on my
younger cousins all the time about the evils of smoking. I am
also a singer/songwriter and am involved in the local theatre so
my voice is precious to me. Not precious enough, however, to
withstand peer pressure because I started smoking at the age of
22. I was rebelling against a religious upbringing and felt
"cool" and "bad" by smoking. I remember distinctly the first
time I was taught to inhale properly...and I was so proud of
myself. Who knew that I would become so addicted?? I smoked for
6 years and was up to over a pack a day and on the weekends, 3
packs in one night! My whole entire life was crumbling into a
very unhealthy state. I had gained 75 lbs, was drinking and
partying WAY too much which also encouraged the smoking(...I
mean, when I drank, I smoke three times as much and with
cigarette prices going up, I was scrounging for money
constantly), my singing voice was worsening and I coughed all
the time. I also got colds and bronchitis ALL the time it
seemed.
WELL...one day, January 10th 1999 to be exact, I just quit! I
was sick of my life and myself and I wanted to be healthy. I
woke up one morning and just decided to stop...cold turkey and
that is the only way I could do it. I couldn't depend on other
products to help me...I figured if I couldn't do it all by
myself on my own willpower, than I was never going to do it at
all and stick with it. At the same time, I began eating healthy
foods and exercising EVERY morning when I got up.
It has been two months and 1 week exactly today. I am 25+ pounds
lighter, my voice is 100 times stronger, I do not cough anymore,
I can BREATHE again, I can walk up the stairs without breaking
into a sweat, I have $500 extra in the bank!, and I FEEL alive
again!!
ANYONE CAN DO IT!! You will NOT gain weight if you exercise and
you CAN exercise when you can BREATHE!!! The first couple of
weeks are hard, but you'll get over it! Your life is so much
more important than a 4-inch long piece of tobacco-filled paper!

Subject: I Stopped Smoking!
Well, FINALLY I quit smoking! After being hooked on the weed for
over 13 years, I have managed to kick the habit and you know
what? Once you set your mind to it, it is not that difficult! My
father, God Bless him, died last year of lung cancer after
smoking for over 40 years. The first year anniversary of his
death is rapidly approaching and I knew I did not want to be
smoking when it arrived. I have now been smoke free for a week,
and yes, I do miss holding a cigarette, but 90% of the time I
smoked was because of habit and not craving. It IS worth the
effort and even the wait gain - a few pounds is FAR healthier
than rotting lungs! Hang in there! Feel free to email me for
support at speciale39@aol.com.

Subject: Never thought I could do it!!!
I just had to share my success with the people who have helped
me to finally put down the cigarettes after smoking for 22
years. I have been smoke-free for 12 days and my God I feel
wonderful. I half-heartedly tried to quit twice before using the
patches but I don't think I was totally convinced that my
decision was a good one. So, I started right back up within 7
days.
I have a birthday coming up and will be turning 38 years old and
I decided to give myself a special gift. I would quit smoking. I
planned my quit date which helped me focus on the goal and not
the action itself. I also have a 5 year old daughter who struck
a deal with me. She said if I quit she promised never to start.
Amazing what a child can do for your sense of purpose. They are
great at guilt. Thank goodness the schools are so actively
promoting non-smoking with these kids.
I was reading some of the letters from other reformed smokers
and I must agree with the majority of them..It really isn't as
difficult as I first thought it would be. I didn't gain any
weight as a matter a fact I lost 4 pounds but I think that was
because I feel like I have a lot more energy. Now I use my lunch
hour to go to the gym for a 30 minute work out 3 days a week. So
all you folks who use the excuse of weight gain..don't..You will
feel so much better once you quit that even if you put on a few
pounds you will have the energy to work them back off easily.
I still find myself wanting a cigarette during certain daily
activities but each day it becomes easier to think about all the
good I'm doing for myself and my family with each cigarette I
don't smoke. Good luck to all of you who have already quit and
all of you who are still rationalizing why you should quit. You
will get there one day.
