LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Hello again everyone!

This past Monday (May 31) was Memorial Day in the United States.
The day is a holiday in honor of all the men and women who have
given their lives in military service to our country.

The holiday began in the late 1800s soon after the U.S. Civil
War, which pitted brother against brother. Each Memorial Day, my
thoughts turn to the meaning of that day. My life, my blessed
freedom, all stems from the heroic efforts of each person who
fought for the beliefs of this country. No matter whether you
live in the U.S. or elsewhere, your country has a unique and
colorful history, with many people who have died so that you
could live. Yes, LIVE!

The early celebration of Memorial Day honored Civil War
veterans. A country fighting itself is much like the smoker
fighting him or herself for the right to quit. In a war there is
loss on both sides of the battle. Even the victor suffers great
losses. I hope that you see yourself in my analogy. You can be
on the winning side or the losing side. The losing side suffers
great pain and death. The winning side suffers through pain and
withdrawal, but emerges victorious over the greater evil of
smoking.

Plan your own memorial day to celebrate your victory over
cigarettes and the death of your habit, before someone else has
to honor your memory at your gravesite.

FEATURED PRODUCT: E-Z Quit Smokeless Artificial Cigarette
http://www.quitsmoking.com/ezquit.htm

THE TWO SIDES OF ADDICTION
You're hearing a lot about nicotine addiction these days.
Withdrawal from a physical addiction to nicotine can be very
uncomfortable, but complete withdrawal can be achieved in a
matter of weeks.

But there's another side to your smoking habit. ORAL ADDICTION.
Keeping a cigarette in your lips. Puffing quickly when you're
nervous. Just holding a cigarette when you pick up the phone, or
a drink. This psychological addiction can undermine the best
intentions. And the best medicine.

You Need E-Z QUIT

THE RE-USABLE ARTIFICIAL CIGARETTE THAT LETS YOU CUT DOWN OR
QUIT THE E-Z WAY!

You do not light it. Instead, take a deep drag and feel like
smoking a real cigarette. 100% Safe! No drugs! No nicotine! Safe
to use with Nicotine Patch or Gum! Perfect for all non-smoking
areas!

When you inhale through an E-Z QUIT, the cartridge releases a
flavor that refreshes your mouth and occupies your taste buds.
Through psychological mechanisms it "fools you" into thinking
you are smoking the real thing, and as a result it helps you to
quit smoking. You just inhale through this device whenever you
get the next urge to smoke, and it helps carry you over each
crisis.

The E-Z QUIT artificial cigarette comes with three mint-flavored
cartridge refills that last 45 days. (Each cartridge lasts about
15 days.)

E-Z QUIT is our best seller because it is affordable and because
anyone can use it to help themselves quit smoking.

Subject: SIX weeks and counting

Hi, I haven't smoked for six weeks and I feel great. I haven't
put on any weight, I haven't been angry and I didn't tell
anyone, not even my husband. He noticed after a week and I told
him not to say anything because I didn't want the pressure of
someone hoping I would give up. I am now over the nicotine
cravings, which only occurred when I was tired. I am however
unsure how the social thing will go. Over the last six weeks I
have not had a big night out! I am really working on the habit
bit and trying to work myself up to a big night out with my
smoking buddies. I keep repeating a phrase in my head "enough is
enough", this means to me that it is time to get over that last
bit of rebellion I have clung to since teenagerhood and get on
with loving something else like life! The cigarettes are part of
my past like sucking my thumb when I was a child...I have grown
out of it! Ps I had been a smoker for 10 years.

Terry Skovenski <TSKO@webtv.net> writes:
Subject: so far success!

Dear Fred:

So far I have been successful. It has been 7 months since I have
quit. And it hasn't been hard, most of the time.

When I first quit, I seemed to obsess about how hard I thought
it was going to be. I did ask my doctor to recommend some help,
after not being able to sleep at night. She recommended using
"the patch," which was just what I seemed to need.

The most difficult part since going off the patch is not gaining
weight. 20 pounds in 7 months isn't too bad, (especially, since
I have recently lost 7 of it).

However, I do want people to know that I agree with you about
the "believe that you can do it." That is the most important
factor of quitting. If you know you can, you can.

So, after 7 month's I still have cravings but I know when to
expect most of them and I know what to do when I have them. Deep
breathing, and focus on why I quit in the first place keeps me
from giving in. Plus my family was so supportive, I couldn't let
them down.

Also, I did find exercise an effective tool. It did relieve
stress and still does. I can now exercise and actually breathe,
which makes exercise most enjoyable and energizing for me.

In closing I would like to say that quitting was the most
satisfying thing I ever did for myself.

Sincerely,
Lori Skovenski

Subject: never unsubscribe

Even though I quit smoking I intend to keep getting your ezine.
Like with alcoholics, one is never "cured" of smoking. For us
too, one is too many and a hundred is not enough. Is still feel
the impulses but reading the success stories as well as the tips
help me to keep on track. I started my subscription at another
email address and I find this very helpful. Also, now that I
have really quit others around me are thinking of it, largely
because I went through it so easily that they're not as afraid
of withdrawal as before. The products you offer are the sort
someone might feel comfortable with while quitting. Keep up the
good work and a big thank you for my neat new email address.
Sincerely,
Patricia Surrey

Debra Martinez <martinezda@att.com> writes:

After three months of being smoke-free, I can feel the health
returning to my body (I can SING again!) but also know that
there is much more healing to be done. I didn't realize how much
pressure there was in my chest when I was constantly adding to
it with another cigarette.

Quitting wasn't easy - I know because I was an expert at
quitting! In the ten years that I have been smoking, I must have
quit at least 200 times, my longest smoke-free time being nine
months! I fell into every trap, including the "just-one-won't
get me started again" trap, the "I can't do this, I should just
forget trying to quit" trap, the "it's not so-o-o bad" trap, and
the "I'm clean now and BEYOND temptation...." My daughter, who
is in the process of quitting, gave me an idea that has helped
me. Her idea is not to think of what you're doing as FOREVER,
because the idea of f-o-r-e-v-e-r is intimidating and the mere
thought of it can cause resolve to weaken. Her idea is to set a
goal, like perhaps a year, when you will give yourself
"permission" to smoke again. That way, the idea of forever is
not a barrier, yet realistically one will most likely stay clean
after a year! At the least, a person can always set another
deadline after achieving the first. It's the same idea as AA,
taking it one day at a time, not looking back or ahead but
focusing on today only. And eventually that stack of "todays"
begins to add up to months and years! And the pride you feel for
having accomplished this formidable task for this great amount
of time is all the strength you need to continue to stay smoke
free, replacing the temporary deadline that gave you initiative
to start down the path in the first place.

Good luck to all of you who are ON THE PATH... You CAN do it!
Just don't ever give up.

Debra Martinez

Thanks for the congrats fred k. I used the nicotrol inhaler for
three days to "keep the edge off" and to get to sleep at night.
After that it was just pure willpower. The reason i tried the
inhaler was because i could use it when i needed it. I felt that
the constant flow of nicotine that a patch would give me would
not work. Well anyway, thanks for your support and i hope
to never hear from you again

Subject: How I quit.

My story begins with a bit of a sadness, I'm afraid, but I hope
someone else can do as I've done. In March of this year my
dearly cherished cat, Kitty, began to refuse her food. She was
otherwise the picture of health, playful and frisky. When I
brought her to the vet I was stunned to learn that the breast
cancer she had survived last year had reared up again, this time
there was nothing he could do. She was not in pain yet but she
was hungry and unable to eat. Her life would only deteriorate
from there on. I looked at her and though it tore my heart to
bits, I had her put down rather than put her through all that
suffering. For days after I struggled with grief while my family
kept telling me how strong I was for doing what I did. It had
taken all the courage I could muster. I later thought, "If I can
do that, then why can't I quit smoking?" I drew from the same
sources of strength and treated it the way I had treated losing
"Kitty". It was a hard choice for which there really was no
choice. It was do the right thing no matter how hard or live
with the shame of being a coward while someone (or thing)
suffered because of my weakness. I got help. I saw my doctor and
went on Zyban. I won! I have Kitty to thank. In a sense I spared
her pain and she returned the favor. I still get urges, of
course. I guess I always will. But every time I say "no" I feel
all the stronger. Now I think "If I can quit smoking, I can do
anything!"

Smoke free since 4/24/99!

Subject: curtains

Hi there ,
After 24 years of heavy smoking its all in the past now. I am
now 68 days old non-smoker. It feels great. The pong is gone and
I feel very fit now .I can drink without a cigarette and the
urge after meals is gone .I manfully control my temper without
the aid of a cigarette when something goes wrong .I am so happy
I feel like flying . I occasionally have some pain in my chest
but what the hell ..... So thank you Fred and the many letter
senders who helped me a great deal in my sufferings as a smoker
as I fondly refer to the ordeal and many thanks to my Lord Jesus
Christ for standing by me during this very difficult period.
