LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Hello again everyone!

This issue is devoted to your stories--stories of triumph and of
trials. Learn from others and give your assistance to those who
need your wisdom.

You're not alone in your struggles!

+++

I like to laugh and I bet you do too. The Quit Smoking Cartoon
of the Week can give you a good laugh every Tuesday. Just visit
http://www.quitsmoking.com/cartoons/index.htm

Now I want to hear some funny stuff from YOU!

I've heard an awful lot of excuses for why someone hadn't quit
smoking. Some were legitimate (well, none are, really, but you
know what I mean) and some were downright laughable. And that's
what I want from you.

Let's make a contest out of this. Here's the plan:

Send me your top 5 excuses for not quitting smoking. Make them
funny, outrageous, silly and "downright laughable". Keep them
clean--this is a family oriented web site and email. Here's an
example list I put together in about five minutes:

5. "I haven't quit smoking yet because there are a few white
spots still showing on my walls."

4. "I'll quit when Santa Claus loses some weight"

3. "Smoking's bad for you ??"

2. "I haven't quit because I need the warmth. It's really cold
outside when I smoke."

1. "I haven't quit because the government is depending on my tax
money."

Come on! You can do better than my weak attempt, can't you?

The deadline for sending your list is September 30th at 11:59 PM
Eastern Time. Only one entry per person is allowed.

A panel of official judges (ok, me, my wife and a couple
friends) will then sift through the submissions and determine
the top three best lists.

The person who submits the third best list will receive a free
Quittin' Time Quit Smoking Clock (TM) --
http://www.quitsmoking.com/clock/index.htm

The person who submits the second best list will receive a free
clock PLUS Nicolite --
http://www.quitsmoking.com/nicolite/index.htm

And the person who submits the best list will receive a free
clock, Nicolite and an E-Z Quit Artificial Cigarette --
http://www.quitsmoking.com/ezquit/index.htm

The lists will be published in the next issue, and permanently
displayed on the web site. If you're a winner you'll get to see
your name "in lights!!"

Okay, now the legal jargon: Your entries must be original--no
copying somebody else's stuff! Void where prohibited, taxed,
etc. etc. All entries become the property of The Quit Smoking
Company.

So, get your jester's cap on, start writing, and send your
entries to [address removed - contest over]

SMOKERS' STORIES

If you can help these folks with your suggestions please send
them email.

Amy <ARKIII@aol.com> writes:

<< Smokers' >>
I quit smoking two months ago. I had smoked for nine years, quit
for 6, smoked for 6 then just quit two months ago. Don't ever
let your guard down. I am quitting again and I cannot believe I
was so stupid to ever have picked one up again after so long. I
was only 22 when I quit the first time and the reason I quit was
" I'm going to quit sooner or later,. it may as well be now. " I
went through so much stress in those 6 years. I ended up
actually picking one up at a house party and continued to smoke
again for 6 years.. I was really consumed with saddness and
depression that I had let myself down, but I was addicted to the
action, the personality it let me be. That is what I missed
most, the personality. I realize though that I prefer being a
non smoker, I could still be fun, crazy, anything. I imagine
this is what an alcoholic wonders; can they still be fun without
drinking, and the answer is yes. God smoking is such a waste of
energy. Thanks for letting me sound my peace of mind.

Subject: 90 days today

Today I truly feel like a non-smoker. Someone once told me that
it takes 90 days to get nicotine completely out of your system,
both physically and mentally. Today is my 90th day with out a
cig. I quit right after my Aunt died from lung cancer; I made a
promise to myself that I would never put my family or friends
through anything like she went through. Seeing her suffer made
me realize that I was stronger than that. So, I kept her name on
a piece of paper in my wallet, and every time I wanted to smoke,
I would pull out the piece of paper. I feel a lot better, smell
cleaner, and look healthier. I don't think about cigarettes
anymore, they are not a part of my life, and that is the best
thing.

Thanks for all of your emails and support! -Meghan

Subject: I am so very scared........

Hi,
I was reading the current issue and read the letters and I have
to tell you that I think I know WHY it is I am not trying to
quit.......

It is FEAR..... I am so very much afraid that I will fail that I
do not have the desire to even try........

Even as I write this my impulse is to go and SMOKE ONE just to
calm
down..

I am 42 years old and have smoked since I was 16.... At one
point I quit for about (this makes me feel very ashamed of
myself) 2 years..... Pretty sad ehhhh???

I remember reading once that EACH TIME you quit and GO BACK
there is a mental re-enforcement towards ATTEMPTING to quit
again.... OUCH !!!

The thought of not smoking is at times so strong that I have a
cigarette just to feel normal........ God I wish I could find
the strength to help get me THRU this;

I know it's in me .....It has to be ...I mean how can a 42 year
old NOT BE IN CONTROL OF HIS OWN MIND, BODY, and WILL !!!!!!
H O W ????

I will keep reading, hoping and praying that I can one day be
FREE of this prison that holds a DEATH PENALTY over my head.....

Sounds pretty THEATRICAL huhh ??? But the truth is that FEAR OF
FAILURE, and the PAIN associated with the realization that, if I
try, and don't make, it WILL BE WORSE THE NEXT TIME I TRY.. IT's
got a hold on me like heroine or cocaine........ Any advise, put
down's, or help will be appreciated..... This is real, it is my
life and this D%&N thing has got me good.......... : (

Beth <poland.5@urx.com> writes:
Subject: 12 days smoke free (and counting)

I am 25 and I have been smoking since I was 15. I have quit off-
and- on, once for almost a year. When I was pregnant with my
second child I quit ( not for my 1st, or 3rd, though). I always
found some excuse for going back.

I am married to a non-smoker, and all of my family except for my
Sister and Mother- in- law are also non-smokers. This made it
really hard to smoke as everyone else can't stand the smell.

I was so ashamed of smoking, I hid it from everyone. I smoked
outside, and only when my husband was at work or I was away from
the house. I would brush my teeth after every cig hoping he
couldn't tell I was smoking again. I would change clothes before
he came home from work, and fix my hair with hairspray so he
couldn't smell it. I would go to the store for no reason, other
than to sneak a smoke. I would buy the cigs with change I would
store up. I only smoked a pack every three or four days, but it
adds up.

On August 6th, I decided to quit. I was smoking a cig while
watching to see if my husband's truck was coming down the road
(so I could go get washed up before he got here). I just felt
pathetic!! I was tired of hiding it. Tired of stinking. Tired of
feeling so ashamed of myself. So I quit. Just like that.

I haven't smoked since, and I told my husband the truth that I
had been smoking. It hasn't been easy at all. I have been eating
everything in sight. So I bought some baby carrots, and I keep
them in sight. Every time the cravings become unbearable, I tell
myself that if I smoke, I will have to go through this again ;
that I will have to try and quit again, and have to go through
the miserable withdrawals, the headaches, the uncontrollable
grumpiness, etc. That, and many prayers are what is keeping me
from smoking.

I have so much more energy. I feel proud of myself. I can kiss
my husband without even thinking about "getting caught" or
hearing him complain about "ashtray mouth". I don't have to hide
or sneak anything. I feel so much better.

It isn't easy, AT ALL! I still think about cigarettes more times
a day than I do anything else. And I wonder if that will ever
stop. But I will not pick up a cig again. That I am sure of.

Thanks Fred for the encouraging mail. It really has helped
reading that I am not going through this alone.

Subject: what now??

I have been nicotine free for 2 weeks now - after 40 years of
puffing away money and my health.

I realised how bad it was when - during this two weeks I was
searching the house for buts to puff on. How pathetic!

Well now -- I am not expecting a miracle -- but I feel
absoultely lousy. My back is killing me -- my head hurts - I
have put on 4 kilo - I cannot sleep -- I am breaking wind all
over the place.

Just to continue with all of this in the name of good health is
going to be hard --

Subject: Quit Smoking

Hi I received this joke. I am sending you this as it may make
the column more humorous, apart from giving a good
message.

An elderly woman walked up to a little old man rocking in a
chair on his porch. Though he looked weathered and feeble, he
had a content smile on his face.
"I couldn't help noticing how happy you look," she said.
"What's your secret for a happy life?"
"Well, I smoke three packs of cigarettes a day," he said.
waving a wrinkled hand through the air, with a smoldering
cigarette between his thumb and finger. "I also drink a case
of whiskey a week, eat fatty foods, and never exercise."
"That's amazing!" said the woman. "So, how old are you?"
"Twenty-six,"

I have tried to quit for the last 10 years no success at all. I
was not feeling well so I went to my family doctor - he told me
I had high blood pressure, Very high Cholesterol, and are 30
pounds overweight. So I decide for my health and myself that I
am not going to smoke no more. Well it has been 5 days and I
have notice little things like smell, I can smell so much now
like flowers my boyfriend bought me flower and they smell so
good. Food has taste again. I know I have a long road ahead of
me. Hopefully I will have the will power to continue.

Thanks to all the other stories people who have written in it
helps to hear that other people know what I am going throughout
and understand it, too.

Subject: This has to be the toughest thing I have ever done!!

I am now in my 4th cigarette free day. I decided not to buy
another pack and "see how it goes". No patch, no planning...
*cold turkey*! I have been a smoker for more than 25 years and
didn't think I would ever be able to stop, with or without help.
I am experiencing both physical & phychological cravings, but I
know I am beyond the worst of it. My 3 beautiful kids are the
reason I won't allow myself to start again.

Best of luck to all who choose to endure this process.

Steve Driesens
