Subject: Here I go Again
I have tried to quit smoking many times to no avail. I haven't
even made it through the first day. I always say if I can just
go one day I can make it. But I never do. I am 27 years old and
I started smoking when I was 12. My dad died 10 years ago from
smoking and you would think that would make me quit but I just
used it as an excuse to smoke more. My husband does not smoke
and never has so he hates my smoking. I don't smoke in my house
or my car so what's my excuse? (we don't have enough room to
list all the lame excuses) Tomorrow is my quit day and I am
scared to death to quit. Just the thought of quitting gives me
butterflies in my stomach. But I REALLY want to quit. It
irritates me that something so stupid has so much control over
me. I am usually head strong and go out and get what I want in
life and don't let anything stand in my way. But this one has a
hold on me that I am going to break. Wish me luck!

Subject: Quit Smoking After Health Scare!!!!
After reading all these stories, I had to write mine. I am 49
years old, female, turning "50" this November, with two
beautiful kids, a great husband, (who is trying to quit) and a
great life.
In April I had some blood detected in my urine, not visible to
the eye, but nevertheless there. I went to the doctor and they
decided it was a urinary infection. Then in August, it got
worse, the blood was very visible, in fact I was peeing, RED
BLOOD. I panicked, and went to my urologist. They did an IVP and
concluded that I had a stone, and oh, wait something else,
hidden in the kidney, looks like a blood clot or maybe a TUMOR..
Tumor, I said, are you kidding. The dr. said no he asked, Do you
smoke? I said yes for 30 or more years. Well then I suggest you
quit now...... He explained that the nicotine and all the bad
things in cigarettes are deposited into the kidneys, like
everything else we put in our system, and all these impurities
just sit there, waiting, and forming stones, and more likely
tumors. I went into the hospital to have them take a biopsy. I
was in surgery for 4 hours, only to find out it was a very LARGE
STONE..... but the surgeon told my husband that he was going in,
looking for kidney cancer for sure. Well, I have a new lease on
life, my check X-ray is clear, my blood is perfect, and my
kidneys are fine. I STOPPED SMOKING, it has been 3 weeks, and I
will never, never, go back again. One good health scare will do
it, only I was lucky. Most people are not, and it becomes too
late. So now while you still have a good chance, quit. My
husband is quitting and so is my daughter who is 21. Thank God
for another chance..
Oh by the way, I feel LIKE A NEW PERSON, and I can breath again.

Subject: Help
I have been a smoker for 21 years now and smoke about 2 to 2 1/2
packs a day. This might not sound as bad as it is, until I tell
you that I am only 31 years old.
I have been struggling for years trying to quit. I, like so many
others at your web site, have tried it all; the patch, the gum,
hypnotism, cold turkey...
Two years ago my lungs gave out and I was out of work for almost
2 months getting Albutirol inhaling treatments daily at the
hospital. My bronchitis had never been so serious, so I quit
smoking cold turkey. However, let's face it - I didn't WANT to
quit, but I literally couldn't smoke (I mean I couldn't even
breathe). Well 2 months later I was feeling fine and once again
started smoking. ( Did I mention that my voice has been getting
a little bit deeper every year as well?)
I am now again ready to quit. My nicorette gum stares at me from
my coffee table each morning as I light the first butt, and
think "tomorrow I'll quit". I really WANT to quit - I really
want to be able to breathe the air in deep strong breaths - I
really want to be able to smell, to taste... not to mention that
I am always catching any little bug that is going around.
What really makes it difficult for me is that I do not know
myself as anything but a smoker. I cannot remember a time in my
life when I was a non-smoker... when a cigarette wasn't my
shield from an uncomfortable social situation, or an outlet for
stress. When it wasn't part of my identity.
I am writing this not because I believe there is anything that
anyone can say or do (that has not already been said, or that I
haven't tried doing) to help me - other then just doing it
already... (not that I am not open to any suggestions/thoughts)
BUT because if there is any way I can get the word out to all
those teens (and pre-teens like I was) who are picking up that
first cigarette today (perhaps on a dare from a friend like my
first one was). I would really like to do something to save some
other young girl or boy from avoiding the discomfort I feel, and
the struggle I have had all my life with an addiction that truly
runs and eventually will ruin your life.

Subject: hey
Hey there... I have written in here before, when I believed that
I had quit. But, I only stayed off for a week or two. The stress
in my life has kept me smoking 2-4 packs a day for the past 6
years. The really scarey thing? I am 16 years old. Lately, I
have been coughing up blood. I went to the doctor's and I found
out that I have the beginnings of emphysema. It was so scarey,
that I decided I needed to quit- for me. Not for my sister, my
parents, my boyfriend. For me, and my life. I am only 16, I
don't want to die. So, I took a few cigarettes out of each pack
and threw them out. Now, I am down to one or two a day. I'm so
excited. My lungs feel cleaner. Please print this for all young
smokers out there. Thanks,
Eva

Subject: Smoking!
I quit smoking about five years ago. I did not use pills gum or
patches. I still live with two smokers in the same house. If I
could put down a cigarette anybody could. Instead of buying
cigarettes I buy something I would rather have instead. The
first week I bought a paint sprayer with the money. This summer
I bought fruit trees and flowers. My money is not going up in
smoke. Try to find something you would rather have instead! It
works for me.

Subject: I QUIT!!
I smoked my last cigarette at 8:30 p.m. on September 6, 1999. I
told my husband and all my friends that September 7 was my first
day to a healthier me. So this is my 4th day, and I'm doing ok.
I'm using the patch because I figured I would need help. I
smoked for about 25 years. I'll be 40 in December and decided
that I needed to quit killing myself. Also, I have two sons,
ages 6 and 10 and I really don't want them to start.
The cravings are there, but they are getting less and less. I
try to view each craving as a wave I can ride in safely to
shore. Also, deep breathing and drinking lots of water helps. I
brush my teeth after every meal because that's when I really
want to smoke.
I know I've quit for good this time. This website is WONDERFUL.
I need all the support I can get and I've added it to my
favorites. Thanks for being there!!!!

Curtis Hack <chef@sk.sympatico.ca> writes:
Subject: My Story
I have been reading these stories from the time I stopped
smoking, and when I read the first issue I made a commitment to
myself that I would quit for good this time so that I could
write a story for all of you to read.
Here it is, the long awaited story (at least for me anyway)
about my success as a non-smoker for the last 39 days. I did it
with the assistance of Zyban, and all the self determination I
could pull together. Every time I have tried to quit smoking I
have waited for the "right" time...this time, I started the
Zyban, set a quit date, and quit. This time was the total wrong
time. I set the date so that I had one week in my last job, and
a two week wait until my new job started. I have been a chef for
the last 5 years, and I went back to school to train as a high
school teacher...so three weeks before the start of my new
career I quit, I also burned my hand real bad on some steam, so
the urge to smoke was greater because tragedy brings out the
excuse I can't quit now".
I used to have 4 cigarettes in the hour before I was to start
work, because I could not have another one for 2 hours. Most of
the time I would sneak off to the washroom an hour into my shift
for a quick one...Is that not the most pathetic thing you have
ever heard!!!! In my new career, I finish lunch and converse
with my fellow teachers about education, and students, and
anything else you can think of. As a smoker I would have rushed
out as soon as I could for a as many smokes as I could have
before having to go back to work.
The date of this letter is Sept. 22, 1999, and I Curtis Hack,
after smoking for 6 years, 9 months, will never light up again,
as this was day 39 of a brand new life, and a way of life that I
so very much enjoy. To some of you that may not be a long time
but I am 24, so ever since I finished high school, I have been a
smoker. I would like to thank my self the most for stopping,
second, my wife for all of the support and putting up with me
for those first shaky days, and last but certainly not the
least, Fred Kelley for sending me these letters from all of you
for the support and the encouragement. You don't know me, and
you don't know that you helped me but all of you did, cause only
smokers know what I have gone through.

I quit smoking about three months ago. I received an ultimatum
from my doctor, quite or die. I've was given prescriptions for
Habitrol and Welbutrin which help me, especially through the
first month. I am finishing up my third and final prescription.
I have been tempted to smoke on several occasions. However, I
always take a second and ask myself do I want to live or do I
want to die. Fortunately for me, I've opted to live. Someone
told me that a craving only last 30 seconds which I'm finding to
be true. When I get a craving I divert my attention for 30
seconds until the its gone. I also try not to think about not
smoking for the rest of my life but rather I only have to not
smoke for today.

UNSUBSCRIBE SUCCESS STORY
When a subscriber to this ezine has quit successfully and asks
to be taken off the list, I ask them to tell their success
story. Here is this issue's story:
Ly10n@aol.com writes:
It would be my pleasure to share how I quit.
I was a smoker for over 20 years, and tried many, many times to
quit. A couple of health issues began recurring, one of which
was a weakened lung -- not from smoking -- and I was not able to
do so many things I used to be able to do. I had alot of
difficulty with shortness of breath.
Also, I had met an incredible Soul, an ex-smoker himself, who
was very supportive, and joked with me about "living to be at
least 120 years old Together".
I really wanted to quit this time, so I went to my doctor, and
asked about Zyban, since I'd heard good reports. I got the
prescription, followed the directions carefully, and on my
chosen "stop date", my SweetHeart and I spent three days on a
mini-vacation in a neighboring state. This way, I was not in
places where my habit was to "light up", he kept us VERY active
going here and there, and most importantly, we kissed lots!
*smile* I'd rather kiss my SweetHeart more than smoke a
cigarette anyday!
At the end of the 3 days, he had to fly back to the west coast,
but with a gentle kiss, and a whispered reminder, he told me I'd
done the hardest part -- I'd gotten through the physical
addiction, and he KNEW I could make it through the psychological
part. He was right!
I want to live to be 120 with him and my little one -- "Happy
Ever After", if you will. My little one gets up in the morning
to run with me -- something I've never done before, and on the
weekends we walk/run and go biking at the local National Park.
We exercise ALOT! I found this made a HUGE difference with
keeping my determination to not start again. That, and it kept
me from gaining weight -- a big fear. (In fact, I've lost 4
pounds since I quit.) We've already gone other places and done
other things, including camping/hiking (first time for me -- and
NO shortness of breath!) and just plain playing around. How
incredible to be able to breath freely again.
As a result of me quitting, I found I'd inspired two of my best
friends and their "significant others" to quit ... One is a
"non-smoker" for about a month now, the other has her stop date
set for the end of the week. Also, one of my co-workers decided
to try to quit again -- also with the assistance of zyban.
My recommendation to any who are considering the big "Q" --
1. Talk to your doctor about zyban -- get all the information,
especially about taking the med BEFORE actually quitting (most
people aren't told that part by their doctor)
2. Make every effort to be AWAY from home the first couple of
days, if it is at ALL possible. Don't be places, or do routines
that are intricately tied with smoking.
3. EXERCISE!!! Even if it means just walking. Start with that (I
did), and over time, make the walks longer, then faster --
"power walking". Begin with stretching exercising rather than
aerobics. Something, anything -- just move!
And most importantly, Remember what's most important in this
Life -- YOU!
Thanks for letting me share...
