LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Hello again everyone!
Time to prepare yourself for the Great American Smokeout!
Thursday, November 18 is the big day to quit for 24 hours. The
article below will hopefully help you get ready and make a
success of the day (and many more days). By the way, just
because it's called "American" doesn't mean non-American's can't
participate! Maybe one day it'll be called The Great Worldwide
Smokeout.
+++
As I mentioned in the last issue, two people met each other
online, through the QuitSmoking.com bulletin board system (BBS).
Now they have met in person and are forging a life together!
Rick has created a web page with their story and some pictures.
Take a look at
http://www.quitsmoking.com/rickmichelle/
Then get on over to the BBS and started chatting with your
fellow quitters. You never know whom you might meet, but you'll
definitely get some great support for quitting.

helped so many people to quit smoking. Now, in conjunction with
an online pharmacy, QuitSmoking.com is making Zyban available to
you. International orders are accepted in most cases.
Just visit
http://www.quitsmoking.com/zyban/
You'll be able to get an online medical consultation. Then 24 to
48 hours after the doctors approve your prescription, you'll
receive your order. (International orders may take longer).

On Thursday, November 25, in the U.S. we celebrate Thanksgiving,
a day for counting your blessings, being with family and
friends, and of course, eating lots of turkey and watching
football.
I want to take a moment to thank each of you for making the
commitment to quit smoking. I'm thankful for your kind words.
I'm thankful for the support you give each other. And yes, I'm
thankful for your business.
This Thanksgiving, take just a moment to count YOUR blessings.

FEATURED PRODUCT: One Step at a Time
http://www.quitsmoking.com/onestep.htm
One Step at a Time is a set of four filters that allow you to
gradually reduce the amount of tar and nicotine you take in when
you puff on your cigarettes.
When you smoke, simply place your cigarette into the filter. The
filter is very small and will not be very noticeable as you
smoke.
The first filter reduces up to 25% of the tar and nicotine. Use
it for one to two weeks. Your body will begin adjusting to the
lower levels of addictive chemicals. Next, begin using the
second filter. It reduces up to 50% of the tar and nicotine in
your cigarettes. After one to two weeks, use the third filter.
It reduces up to 70% of the tar and nicotine. Finally, use the
fourth filter. It reduces your tar and nicotine intake by up to
90%.
The final step for you is to quit smoking completely. By
gradually reducing the addictive chemicals in your cigarettes,
you may find that quitting becomes a whole lot easier.
You can see and purchase the One Step at a Time filters on our
web site. Go to http://www.quitsmoking.com/onestep.htm
for more
information.

ARTICLE: Here Comes the Great American Smokeout!
by Fred H. Kelley
fredk@quitsmoking.com
Are you ready for 24 hours without cigarettes? That's what the
Great American Smokeout is all about. Each year on the third
Thursday of November, The American Cancer Society (ACS)
organizes the Smokeout. According to ACS, more Americans try to
quit smoking on this day than any other day of the year,
including New Year's Day.
What does it take to participate? Just you. There's nothing to
join or buy or sign up for. You simply commit to quit for one
day. You can do that, right?
Here are some tips to make this year's Smokeout a success.
FOLLOW A PLAN OF ACTION
If you're reading this you have already started "the plan".
You've already decided that you want to know more about
quitting. The first step is to make a decision that you want to
quit. Also, be sure you know WHY you are quitting. Is it to
improve your health? Save money? Improve your love life? Get a
clear picture in your mind of the reason why you want to quit,
so you have a clear "end-goal".
PREPARE AND SUCCEED
The next step is to get ready to quit. Most successful quitters
don't just finish a cigarette, then say, "That's the last
cigarette I'll every smoke," and quit on a whim. Instead,
successful quitters prepare for the day when they will quit.
To prepare for your quit, decide what day you'll quit. In this
case, plan to quit on the Great American Smokeout day. You'll
have lots of other people around you doing the same thing, plus
support on the radio, TV and other media.
DECIDE HOW YOU'LL QUIT
Decide on the method you'll use to quit. Will you quit cold-
turkey and use sheer willpower to quit? Or will you opt to use
nicotine patches or nicotine gum? Have you considered Zyban?
What about other methods such as gradually reducing the number
of cigarettes you smoke each day?
Visit http://www.quitsmoking.com for many different methods,
ideas and products that you can use to quit.
KEEP THE NICODEMON AWAY
Once you've decided on your method for quitting, and actually
quit, you'll be tempted to smoke again. You can make staying
quit easier if you follow some simple guidelines:
Stay away from other smokers. This may be difficult if you've
made some great friends on your smoking breaks. But being around
other smokers will tear down your resolve, at least in the
beginning of your quit. Stay out of bars and other places where
smoking is common.
Discard all your cigarettes, lighters and ashtrays. Don't leave
anything in your environment that might remind you or tempt you
to smoke.
Stay out of convenience stores or other places where you
commonly purchase cigarettes.
When you have a bad craving for a cigarette take a deep breath,
drink some water, go for a short walk, or do something else to
distract yourself. Cravings will subside in just a minute or
two, whether or not you smoke.
Exercise. The benefits to smokers are tremendous. You'll improve
your health, and find that quitting is much easier when you are
exercising. Exercising can easily relieve stress that you tried
to relieve by smoking. Smoking and exercise are not compatible.
Let exercise replace smoking in your life.
Plan rewards for yourself. Quitting smoking IS a big deal and
anyone who does it deserves a big reward. Of course, quitting
itself is the biggest reward, but you should also make a list of
rewards that you'll give yourself when you pass certain
milestones. For example, after one week of being smoke-free, you
might buy yourself a new CD or movie. After one month, go out to
a nice dinner. After 6 months or a year, take a reward vacation.
Write down the rewards. Put them on your calendar and give
yourself a goal to work toward. With all the money you'll save
by not smoking, you'll be able to afford to reward yourself!
NOW GET STARTED
The Great American Smokeout is a great way to prove to yourself
that you can quit for a day. But if you can quit for one day,
you can surely quit for a week, or a month or a year. Give it a
chance and next year you won't have to think about the Smokeout.
Re-read this article, then follow the directions. It's simple
and within your reach.

SMOKERS' STORIES
If you can help these folks with your suggestions please send
them email.
Jenny <stoeling@cyberone.com.au> writes:
Hi, I have quit smoking since 27 May- just over 5 months. I
found the first 3 months REALLY hard, and occasionally would
"give in" and start one up. Eventually I scared myself, as I had
a few in a row and realised I really did not want to start
again. I simple could not "play" with such a powerful addiction.
It's important to remember this, as previously I would of thrown
my hands up in despair. However this time I persisted and
refused to let my slips drag me down. Alot of it is about
attitude and believing I can do it. I smoked for 13 years and
gave up at 27. I NEVER thought I would be able to give up. What
a miracle we ALL are!!!
Towards the end of my smoking I would wake up in the morning
feeling terrible, thinking "not another day of shoving 25
cigarettes down my lungs". I was constantly coughing, I am
asthmatic, felt terrible, no energy, terrible skin etc etc etc.
I love this newsletter as I REMEMBER how bad it was. I believe
this is crucial otherwise I can easily be enticed back, but the
"look" of someone smoking. Thank you all for your stories and
encouragement. It keeps me remembering why I stopped and
grateful that I have done it. Jenny

Subject: We have quit!
My husband was smoking two packs per day, and I was smoking one
pack per day. For months we had talked about quitting, but never
did. Then, on Oct. 1, 1999, my husband began having chest
tightness and pain, which radiated down his left arm.
The diagnosis, of course, was a heart attack. He was lucky
though...
It was considered a light attack, and did not require
surgery....only a heart catherization procedure and the
placement of permanent 'stents' into two arteries. What a close
call!
We feel God gave us a wake-up call and another chance! We
stopped smoking immediately and we are feeling SOOOO much
better!
Now, if an experience like this doesn't make you quit - then,
nothing will!
Hope this helps someone!

Subject: A piece of advice
Hi All,
I may not be too old to render an advice to millions of you out
there, but, I have been reading through all the mails each of
you have sent which illustrates the determination and self
restraint that it takes to QUIT.
What it really takes to quit is the absolute ownership of ones'
life and the desire to live it through. I have known people who
opine that death is inevitable and what difference does it make
to smoke or quit. I would definitely want to die peacefully than
to cough my life up with blood and the likes.
Any amount of letters or coaxing, cajoling etc.. cannot induce
the urge to quit as this sense of quitting has to come from
within You.
REMEMBER! YOU MADE NICOTINE A PART OF YOUR LIFE - NOW
YOU REMOVE IT -- ONLY YOU!
Guess I have not been to philosophical. Think about it its your
life after all.
Regards,
Ramaswamy.K.N
