For Immediate ReleaseSmoking Not Y2K Compatible For Immediate Release ATLANTA, GA--(Dec. 16, 1999)--Smokers have a unique opportunity this coming January 1 when they make their New Year’s resolutions to quit smoking. According to one smoking cessation proponent, it will be an opportunity that comes around only once every thousand years. "I call it New Millennium’s resolutions," says Fred Kelley, of QuitSmoking.com. "Think about it. We’re on the brink of a new millennium, a time of massive change and growth and improvement. What better time for smokers to commit to quit smoking?" Kelley asks. Kelley is the president of QuitSmoking.com, an online company and web site dedicated to helping smokers quit. The web site provides free information to help smokers learn how to quit and maintain their smoking cessation efforts. "Quitting smoking is one of the top New Year’s resolutions each January and on the eve of year 2000 I want to make sure smokers are prepared to quit," Kelley says. He’s written a new report called "Smoking is Not Y2K Compatible" which outlines the steps a smoker should take to quit smoking in the next millennium. The report is available free at http://www.quitsmoking.com. According to Kelley, most smokers attempt to quit several times before finally quitting permanently. "Roughly 70% of all smokers in America say they want to quit. That’s nearly 34 million people. Of those about 1.3 million will actually quit this year," he says. Kelley notes that the keys to quitting permanently are having the desire to quit and believing that you can quit. "Those are critical to success," Kelley emphasizes. The Internet has created a new environment and tool for smokers to use in their smoking cessation efforts. For example, the QuitSmoking.com site provides a bulletin board system where smokers can exchange messages of support or pleas for help. The site also provides a real-time chat room that allows visitors to type messages in a conversation-like manner. Kelley emphasizes that smokers don’t have to quit on their own. With online help and many smoking cessation aids such as nicotine gum, patches and an artificial cigarette, Kelley insists that smokers can and will quit in droves in the coming millennium. "Year 2000 brings exciting possibilities to our lives. I’m most excited about the possibility that so many people will quit cigarettes forever," Kelley says. ###
