Smoker's VitaminCataract

Cataract is the progressive clouding of the lens of the eye leading eventually to blindness. Smoking has been linked to increased risk of cataract.

  • Researchers at Harvard Medical School's Channing Laboratory produced strong evidence that smoking more than doubles the risk of cataract. Dr. Sheila West of the Dana Center for Preventative Ophthalmology in Baltimore, wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association estimates that 20 percent of cataracts are the result of smoking.
  • Researchers Paul Jauques and Leo Chylack at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston ran a study on vitamins and the risk of cataract. Their results showed that individuals with a high intake of vitamin E had only half the risk of cataract compared to those of with low intake.
  • Research done by Paul Knekt and his co-workers to that of the Social Insurance Institute in Helsinki, Finland showed a mere doubling of cataract risk for individuals with a low intake of vitamin E compared to those with a high intake.
  • Results from one study showed that people with a high intake of of vitamins C and E and beta-carotene had an 80% less chance of developing cataract than those with a low intake.
  • A 1991 study by James Robertson and his research team in the Medical School at the University of Western Ontario set out to examine the link between cataract and vitamin supplements. 250 patients with cataract, age 55 and over were compared with a similar number who were cataract free. Results of showed that individuals taking a vitamin C supplements of 300-600 milligrams per day cut their risk of cataract by 70 percent.
