Smoker's Vitamin
According to a 1986 report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services approximately 85 percent of adults have some periodontal disease. Experts are convinced that smoking increases the risk. Bleeding gums and loosened teeth are two of the main symptoms of periodontal disease, and they are also main symptoms of scurvy, the vitamin C deficiency disease. These two facts lead researchers to wonder if vitamin C could help prevent periodontal disease. The results of several studies do indeed show a link between increased intake or increased blood levels of vitamin C and improved gum health. However, and intake well above the Recommended Daily Allowance was required to show protective benefits. References U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (1986).
