Smoker's Vitamin
Cigarette smoking is associated directly with a reduced sperm count and increased sperm abnormalities. Normal sperm contains approximately 8 times more vitamin C than that found in the blood. It is also known that smoking depletes vitamin C levels in the body. Studies lead by Obstetrics and Gynecology researchers at the University of Texas Medical Center confirmed the correlation between vitamin C and sperm quality. 75 men aged 20-35 who smoked at least a pack a day were divided into 3 groups. The first group received a placebo, the second 200mg/day of vitamin C and the third received 1000mg/day of vitamin C. After 4 weeks the group receiving the placebo showed no improvement. Both groups receiving vitamin C showed improved sperm quality. Group 3, consuming the highest amount of vitamin C showed the greatest sperm quality improvement. Research at the University of California and the US Department of Agriculture's Western Nutrition Research Center showed similar results as stated above. Their findings showed that vitamin C protects the human sperm from damage. The research also implied that with lower levels of vitamin C, which is common with smokers, may result in a lowered sperm quality and increased likelihood of birth defects.
