1. ADDICTION means that the substance, nicotine, is in control
and you are not. Addictions manifest as urges, or the proverbial "nicotine
fits". An urge seeking gratification will rise, peak and subside in 2 to 4 minutes.

4. MAKE UP YOUR MIND! The first red card in the deck is titled
"Decision Time". Nothing happens until the smoker decides. The card states in
part: "The decision to stop smoking must be stronger than my desire to continue

This is especially true of any type of behavior modification. To change the behavior -
first change the mind. Simply put - to succeed you must "want to".
5. DAY ONE! On the morning of the actual stop date, the first blue card, 1a, should

should be met immediately by a firm and determined "NO!" This can be expressed
internally or aloud, but do it with conviction. The focus card should be retrieved from

6. IT'S A SYSTEM! Read side 1a, take 3 deep breaths. (Inhale as if smoking) Allow
the pure oxygen experience to calm the physical craving and relax the nervous system.
7. USE IT! Read side 1b, take 3 more deep breaths. Pause a moment, let the message
on the card sink into the consciousness. This is how you regain concentration and put the
mind in control. Remember - withdrawal is the first stage of healing. The nicotine fits
cannot kill you and they are in fact quite fleeting.
8. TAKE BACK CONTROL! Throughout the day, when the urge to reach for a smoke
strikes, you will find yourself in varying degrees of conflict. This is because your new
behavior - not smoking - and your old addicted behavior - are out of accord. Instead,
reach for the daily Focus Card and end this conflict. It is the wake up call needed to
keep you on track toward health and freedom, but it can only work if you use the
counter-thought card. The deep breathing is essential. Be sure to do it.
9. MENTAL PUSH-UPS! Reading the same card several times in the same day is
perfectly okay. Repetition is the basis of programmed learning. Tomorrow is another day -
another card - another lesson.
10. ONE DAY AT A TIME! Day 2 means that card 2 is utilized. Day 3, card 3 etc....
When a green card is reached (on day 9, 18, 27,36 and 45) read it and smile. It is the
pat-on-the-back, congratulations you have earned for the milestone reached - as well as
the encouragement to keep going.
